Kennington Primary School is the base school for the Bendigo Deaf Facility. The Bendigo Deaf Facility works in collaboration with students, families and services to encourage Deaf and Hard of Hearing students reach their full educational and personal potential.
The Bendigo Deaf Facility continues to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students within mainstream schools from Foundation to Year 12. After students complete Grade 6 at Kennington Primary School, they continue their schooling at Bendigo South East Secondary College and complete Years 11 and 12 at Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
The Bendigo Deaf Facility supports Deaf and Hard of Hearing students as needed. Teachers of the Deaf, Classroom Teachers and Parents/Carers work together to develop an Independent Education Plan for each student. They work to establish student goals, based on areas of need, and strategies to achieve these. These goals reflect the whole student, encouraging them to reach their full educational and personal potential. Deaf educational support staff work as Auslan Language Models.

Teachers of the Deaf (T.O.D.) are based at each school to support the needs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing students as needed. Teachers of the Deaf, Classroom Teachers, Parents and Carers work together to develop an Independent Education Plan for each student. Kennington Primary / Bendigo Deaf Facility
As a Deaf Facility, we work closely with the team at Hearing Australia in Bendigo. Regular visits from an Audiologist are made to each campus, allowing for onsite troubleshooting, sharing of technology and quick modifications which may be necessary.
Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and other specialist services work onsite as needed.
Students within the Deaf Facility also have access to financial support through McDonald House Trust, where a percentage of a student’s educational expenses can be claimed.
Students work one on one or in small group sessions depending on their individual needs. Deaf Facility staff support includes a withdrawal program as needed and support in a fully inclusive classroom.
Support areas include speech and listening, language, literacy, and numeracy.
Deaf Studies – we have a weekly session where all P-6 students come together with a focus on audiology, social and emotional, safety and advocacy.
All students at Kennington Primary School from Grade Prep to Grade 6 have the opportunity to learn Australian Sign Language, (Auslan) in our LOTE program. In addition to learning the language, students discover the similarities and differences between English and Auslan and learn about the community and culture shared by Deaf people.
We have staff attend all camps and excursions to support our students.
We attend Deaf events such as Deaf Sports.
We hold Student Support Group meetings on a termly basic where all stakeholders are invited.
The Victorian Deaf Education Network offers membership to educational professionals who lead programs that specialise in teaching children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
